National Park Mt. Ruapehu [ry-a-pe-way], January 1998

I stayed in the small town Turangi. Actually it's a kind of ski resort a part of the year. The days before I took the Tongariro Crossing and that was in very bad weather - wind up to 20 m/s gusts and worse - no views at all - low clouds.

Bill from Bellbird Lodge took me in his bus to Whakapapa [fa-ka-pa-pa] Ski Area. Here lazy me took the ski lift op some hundreds meters. Later on I had a climb of approx. 2 hours to the volcano rim in approx. level 2,600 m.

The slope of Ruapehu was rather steep and with small loose stones making it a tedious work to climb.
