PYRENEES: GAVARNIE & BRECHÉ de ROLAND

Back to the map

HI FRIENDS, HOLA AMIGOS, BON JOUR!

Here I have the pleasure to show a few of my photos from the interesting hike:

July 2001: GAVARNIE (1,500m) - BRECHÉ DE ROLAND(2,800m) - GAVARNIE

We had to stay down three days before we went hiking due to a heavy rain and thunder  :-(

But surely it was worth while to wait some days for the good weather.

Please have some patience ness - because the photos are in high resolution - it could take some minutes to download the photos.

CIRQUE DE GAVARNIE!!

Here Tina & I are standing in front of the famous - and very touristy popular place.

It was easy to understand, because "Le Grande Cascade" with its 3-400m fall was amazing.

EAGLES!

Close by we saw an eagle just above us. While we very "scrambling" up on the steep part of the hike.

EDELWEISS:

On our way up - VOW. The first Edelweiss I ever have seen! This famous post card flower is a funny and downy flower - growing not below 1,500m.

REFUGE SARADDETS

Just beneath Breché de Roland lies the very crowed Refuge Sarradets. It was just like to visit a skiing hut - except no skis around. Too crowed after my opinion.

VULTURE!

LOOK - up there a vulture. I have never seen a vulture before. An amazing large bird of dead cadavers - not a bird of prey.

It glided very majestic above us for some minutes - but no one of us were dead - yet - so it let for an other place.

HMMMMMM....!

Enjoying the nice view up to the Breché - and suddenly the Emergency chopper came up from Gavanier - it is normally parked near our campsite in Gavanier.

FEELING SMALL!

Here Tina is on her way to the big door. Sometimes we feel small in the great nature.

JUST LOOKING!

Having a break on our 400m way up. Time to look and enjoy the strange "door" into the Spanish national park.

WHAT A VIEW !

I the height of 2,800m we had a very nice view right on the border to Spain from here we could see Monte Perdido and a little down into the spectacular Odessa valley.

Later on I visited this very nice valley and mountain.

HI - THERE !

After some astonishing minutes a Spanish guy came up from where. We didn't see him before he were there - without any backpack. Well, he just walked up to see!

DINNER TIME

Whilst the clouds are coming up down from the valley I'm trying to compose the days dinner at out camp.

By the way we got one of only two snow free sites - and just in the sun - lucky us.

DOING THE WASH.

Tina was doing the wash while more clouds came near up to us. This was really a fantastic experience for us Danish low lenders.

The walk down from Refuge Saraddets was nit something special, beside the noise marmots and exercise in hiking down. Still some nice view towards Cirque de Gavarnie.

A shot two day hiking but with rewarding views - we strongly urge anyone to go up there and have a look. Be careful - you'll get addicted to such views.
