Kayaking: Tour de Gudenå, Denmark

Read about Preparations here.

Tour de Gudenå 2006.

This is a story about my very very first Tour de Gudenå Race. In our club it's a mythic race, which only the tough ones participates in. Several years before I have thought what did really get people to join this very looooong race.

IMPORTANT: One of the most important things to do before TdG, besides doing a hell lot of training, is to ensure your gear and energy. By the help of the experienced Ralf-The-Mean-Rowing-Machine, we planned how to get enough energy intake, and how to row a couple of 25km long tours before facing our challenge. One of mine was how on earth to sit down in the kayak for  up to 33 km - without getting hurt in your 'lower part of your back'!

The start took place at 11:30 together with some 150 other kayaks. BANG - and off we went. It came rather surprising to us, that the waves from the other kayaks were so strong. Hence, we had difficulties to steer our kayak - rather funny and difficult. Ok here we got our first TdG experience just 20 secs in the race. More to come

The pace is rather high in the beginning of the race, because everyone wants to get first to a narrow spot after some 5 km. Next to find the strength of your fellow competitors. It is rather important in the beginning to find some other kayak teams to follow - and you see them by rowing strengths.

When oyu find them, them you can form a nice group and use the effect of drag from the other kayaks - just like in bicykle races.

We hang to a small group in the beginning - oh, they were a little to fast for us, and off they were. Out first victory we got, a the Fulden Bridge crossing. Here you have to carry your kayak some 50m across a small road  always crowed whith a lot of spectators......yes, there Bodil and Jan were shouting at us.
